When Your Body Doesn’t Feel Safe, Healing Feels Hard

If you’re here, there’s a good chance you’ve already tried a lot. You’ve cleaned up your diet, added supplements, and spent time trying to understand what your body needs. You’ve likely been thoughtful, consistent, and committed.

And still, something isn’t fully clicking.

You might feel tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Your digestion may be inconsistent, your hormones feel off, or your body just doesn’t respond the way you expect it to. And if you’re a parent, you may be seeing similar patterns in your child—symptoms, behaviors, or sensitivities that don’t quite make sense, despite everything you’re doing to help.

At some point, it becomes frustrating. It can feel like you’re doing everything right and still not getting the results you’re looking for.

What if the issue isn’t what you’re doing, but the state your body is in while you’re doing it?

Before the body can heal, it has to feel safe. Not just logically safe, but safe within the nervous system. Your body is constantly asking, often in the background, “Am I safe enough to heal right now?” If the answer is no—even subtly—it shifts into protection.

When your body is in that protective state, it prioritizes survival over healing. Digestion can slow or become inconsistent, motility can change, and nutrient absorption may not work as efficiently. Hormones respond to stress signals, energy is conserved rather than expanded, and symptoms begin to show up in ways that can feel confusing but are actually intelligent adaptations.

This is why doing more doesn’t always lead to better results. You can be eating well, taking the right supplements, and following a thoughtful plan, but if your body still feels like it needs to stay on guard, it won’t fully receive any of it.

This doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It means your body is trying to protect you.

At AK Wellness, we don’t separate gut health, hormones, and the nervous system because your body doesn’t experience them separately. We start by helping your system gently come out of that protective state, creating the conditions where healing can begin to happen again. From there, everything else—nutrition, supplements, testing—can actually work the way it’s meant to.

One simple place to begin is by supporting the vagus nerve, which plays a central role in helping the body shift into a more regulated, restorative state. In the book Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve, Stanley Rosenberg describes simple, body-based techniques to help the nervous system move out of stress. One of the most well-known is a gentle eye and neck exercise designed to signal safety to the brain.

There are also other accessible ways to begin supporting the same pathway, including slow breathing and gentle humming. You can sit or lie down comfortably, place one hand on your chest and one on your belly, and breathe slowly through your nose. As you breathe, allow your exhale to become slightly longer than your inhale, and softly hum on the exhale. The vibration created by humming can stimulate the vagus nerve and send a signal of safety to your body.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t have to take long. Even a minute or two can begin to shift your internal state in a meaningful way.

If you feel silly doing it - PERFECT - smile while you're doing it and your body will feel that much safer.

You don’t need to force your body to heal or keep adding more. You need to create the conditions where healing becomes possible again. When your body begins to feel safe, things often start to change in a way that feels more steady, more supported, and more sustainable.

If this resonates, you’re in the right place.
