3 Morning Habits for Your Gut + Mood
How you start your morning can influence how you feel for the rest of the day. And because the gut and brain communicate constantly through what we call the gut-brain axis, many of the habits that support digestion also support energy, mood, and overall well-being.
The good news is that your morning routine doesn't need to be elaborate. Here are three simple places to start.
1. Start with water
After a night of sleep, having a glass of water in the morning is an easy way to begin rehydrating.
Hydration is also important for normal digestion and bowel function, particularly if constipation is something you struggle with.
You don't need a complicated morning drink or expensive powder. Start with water. If you're exercising heavily, sweating a lot, or have increased fluid needs, electrolytes may sometimes be useful as well.
And coffee absolutely counts as part of a lovely morning. Just don't let it be the only thing you drink until noon.
2. Move a little
You don't need to wake up at 5 a.m. and complete an hour-long workout before the rest of the world is awake.
A walk, a few stretches, yoga, or even ten minutes of movement around the house can be a great way to transition from sleep into the day.
Regular physical activity supports digestive health, sleep, metabolic health, and mood. If you spend much of your day sitting, getting a little movement in early can also make it easier to avoid reaching the end of the day realizing you barely moved.
The best morning movement is the kind you'll actually do.
3. Give yourself a few quiet minutes
This might be the one I think we underestimate most.
Many of us start the day by immediately checking email, reading the news, scrolling our phones, getting kids out the door, or mentally running through everything that needs to happen.
Your brain goes from sleep to GO almost instantly.
You don't need a 30-minute meditation practice to change that.
Drink your coffee without your phone for five minutes. Step outside. Take a few slow breaths. Write down what you need to remember that day. Sit somewhere quiet before everyone else wakes up.
Stress and digestion are closely connected, and the communication between the nervous system and digestive system goes both ways. Creating even a little space before the day gets busy can be a simple way to support both.
Keep it simple
There is no perfect morning routine.
You don't need lemon water, a 12-step supplement regimen, an elaborate meditation practice, and a sunrise workout to have a healthy morning.
Start with the basics:
Drink some water. Move your body. Give yourself a few quiet minutes.
Small habits that you can actually repeat are usually much more useful than an impressive routine you can only maintain for a week.
And if your digestive symptoms are persistent—whether that's bloating, constipation, abdominal discomfort, reflux, or changes in bowel habits—that's worth looking at more closely rather than simply adding more wellness habits.
